Webinar: Which ecosystem model works best for what you need?

In this webinar, NIWA researchers Vidette McGregor and Samik Datta will discuss three ecosystem models of varying complexity. They will compare the model dynamics to each other and to current knowledge, and discuss appropriate use of each model.

The Ecosystem models project has developed an Atlantis model, a food-web model and a size-based ecosystem model for Tasman and Golden Bays.

These models allow researchers and decision-makers to test different scenarios to understand effects on the whole ecosystem – but which model works best for a specific situation?

The project team compared the modelling approaches and explored which are the most useful to answer specific questions. This presentation will discuss which model to use depending on the criteria.

This webinar is open to everyone but will be of particular interest to people working in marine management and planning.

You can join us at the venue, through a virtual hub, or register via Zoom videoconferencing to view on your own device.

We welcome questions in advance if you have anything specific you would like covered; email them to sustainableseasNC@niwa.co.nz

About the speakers

Vidette McGregor is an ecosystem modeller at NIWA, with a background in statistics and mathematics. Her work focuses on researching and applying statistical and mathematical techniques to problems related to the distribution, abundance and dynamics of marine populations. This includes single-species stock assessments, and ecosystem modelling.

Samik Datta is a population modeller at NIWA, with a focus on mathematical modelling and simulation of biological systems. His current research includes habitat bottlenecks, invasive species modelling, developing software, size-based ecosystem modelling, characterising New Zealand’s albacore tuna fishery, and spatial modelling of tuna in the Indian Ocean.
