Sustainable Seas brings together New Zealand’s best scientists and experts, to provide knowledge and tools to underpin ecosystem-based management (EBM). EBM is a holistic and inclusive way to manage the competing uses for, demands on, and ways that New Zealanders value our marine environment.
Our research includes biophysics, economics, social science, policy, and mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge). We are using this to develop practical knowledge and tools that will help others better manage New Zealand’s vast marine resources for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
We are working with Māori, industry, government and communities to identify what tools are needed and what the spiritual, cultural and social marine values that matter most to New Zealanders are.
