Te Ao Tūroa Economies (June 2024)
This report explores how Māori values and knowledge can guide the development of sustainable marine economies. The Te Ao Tūroa framework highlights the deep connection between Māori people and the natural world, emphasising respect for nature, cultural knowledge, and traditions. It is built on three key pillars:
- Wao Atua: Represents the life energy from natural spaces where Māori gods reside, stressing the need for a healthy environment for human well-being.
- Wao Tūpuna: Focuses on the wisdom and practices of ancestors, combining historical knowledge with modern Māori customs and rituals.
- Wao Tāngata: Emphasises the practical application of Māori knowledge, highlighting the responsibility to protect the environment and cultural heritage for future generations.
By balancing these pillars, the Te Ao Tūroa framework offers a holistic approach to creating marine economies that respect and preserve the environment, culture, and traditions, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
