Reclaiming and preserving indigenous knowledge of coastal and marine ecosystems

The Maramataka is an ancient knowledge system developed through deep connections with the environment, serving as a natural timekeeper by tracking the moon's phases to guide customary activities. In Aotearoa, Maramataka is still used by indigenous practitioners to guide environmental interactions and ecosystem management. The Ngā Tohu project seeks to utilise Maramataka as a traditional monitoring system. Te Korowai describes the process of reclaiming the traditional knowledge of Maramataka, positioning the reclamation within the framework of restoring the korowai o Papatuanuku.
