The purpose of this report is to help Sustainable Seas support existing iwi and hapū kaitiakitanga by understanding cumulative effects from a Māori perspective. This report presents some of the barriers faced by iwi and hapū across Aotearoa New Zealand with regards to management of cumulative effects in freshwater, estuarine and marine environments, and potential solutions to overcome these barriers.
Iwi and hapū management plans (IEMPs) from Heretaunga (Hawke’s Bay region) lodged with Hawke’s Bay Regional Council were used in the collation and analysis of this report. In addition, a selection of case studies derived from iwi- and hapū-driven research, strategies and reports across Aotearoa are examined to understand potential barriers and solutions to enabling Māori-driven environmental management.
