Maritime Museum Breakfast Talk: Blue Economy

What is a ‘blue economy’, and how can Aotearoa get one? Join researchers Nick Lewis and Jason Mika to discuss how can we best develop our marine economy, while protecting the taonga of our marine environment.

This is the first event in a breakfast talk series in partnership with the NZ Maritime Museum.

We are in a century of extraordinary climatic and social uncertainty. Some predict there will be severe and increasing ecological, social and economic crises. Many are coming to the conclusion that we need to learn to ‘do’ economy differently – changing the way we think about, live with and use our marine resources will be critical.

This breakfast talk will explore how some enterprising New Zealanders are using the seas in new and exciting ways, how our industries are responding, and how Māori are leading the way in creating a new ‘blue’ economy.

This event is free, but registration is required.

About the speakers

Dr Nick Lewis is an economic geographer at the School of Environment at the University of Auckland. He studies the interplay of investment processes, policy and institutions in industry development. His Sustainable Seas research is investigating ways to create a blue economy in New Zealand. He has previously studied how the wine and education industries were formed. He leads the Creating value from a blue economy and New blue economy in Kaikōura: a participatory process approach projects.

Dr Jason Mika (Ngāi Tūhoe, Whakatōhea, Ngāti Awa and Ngāti Kahungunu) is the Director of Te Au Rangahau (the Māori Business and Leadership Centre) at Massey University. His research interests are indigenous entrepreneurship, innovation, management, and organisations. He co-leads the Whai Rawa, Whai Mana, Whai Oranga: Creating a world-leading indigenous blue economy project.
