Waikawa Marae Science Wānanga
This is the fifth of a series of Science Wānanga, to be held in the rohe (area) of Te Atiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu iwi. This experience provides secondary students of Māori descent and their teachers with the opportunity to gain practical scientific skills and knowledge in real-life contexts.
The Sustainable Seas Science Challenge is pleased to host the attendance of Collingwood Area School, Motueka High School and Golden Bay High School to join Queen Charlotte College, Marlborough Boys High and Kaikoura High School in the University of Otago Science Wānanga in partnership with Waikawa Marae and Te Atiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu.

This experience provides secondary students of Māori descent and their teachers with the opportunity to gain practical scientific skills and knowledge in real-life contexts, working alongside university scientists, postgraduate students and the local Māori community as inspirational role models who respect the mātauranga that students bring.
The Challenge will be supporting schools to send a teacher and five Year 9-10 students to build their capacity in marine science and empower them to pursue further study in this area.
