Tool for collaboratively managing cumulative effects

Managing cumulative effects (CE) from human activities and natural events is one of the most urgent and complex problems facing Aotearoa’s coastal and marine decision-makers today.

The Enabling inter-agency collaboration on cumulative effects project, led by NIWA’s Kate Davies, has developed the Aotearoa Cumulative Effects (ACE) framework to enable a consistent, ki uta ki tai (mountains-to-sea) collaboration on cumulative effects management.

The Research Round-up is a concise, lay-friendly overview of the research and ACE framework. The framework guides collaborative CE management across a range of scales. It was developed with iwi and stakeholders and is underpinned by the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi, especially regarding partnership and rangatiratanga.

A special issue of the Resource Management Journal focused on this research is scheduled for publication in November 2019.
