Webinar: Using drones to monitor marine ecosystems

Dr Leigh Tait from NIWA will describe his research on monitoring kelp and seaweed biodiversity of coastal marine ecosystems with drones.

Drones have great potential for monitoring habitats that are difficult to reach or cover large areas. Leigh has assessed whether standard (RGB) and specialised cameras (multispectral) can accurately distinguish natural coastal habitats and will discuss the efficiency and limitations of this technology.

Leigh will present research from a Sustainable Seas project that has mapped the impact of post-earthquake lifting of the Kaikōura coastline on kelp and other seaweed species. This research will inform management of the coast by identifying areas which need protection to help kelp forests recover.

This webinar is open to everyone but will be of interest to people working in marine management, monitoring, conservation or related science fields.
