He Kāinga Taurikura o Tangitū

The journey and recommendations of the Treasured Coastal Environment project (June 2024)

This report outlines our journey and presents recommendations from He Kāinga Taurikura o Tangitū (Treasured Coastal Environment project). It is designed for the hapū represented by Maungaharuru-Tangitū Trust (the Hapū) and other hapū and iwi. The methodology is underpinned by Kaupapa Māori research principles and aims to share perspectives and enhance understanding of the Hapū connection to Tangitū (moana in Te Matau-a-Māui – Hawke’s Bay), mahinga kai (Kuku Reef) and kaimoana (kuku). The report also includes a link to a Story Map that introduces the Hapū cultural context and summarises the scientific data collected by NIWA during a pilot field study in late November 2022.
